THE "D" WORD
According to the Pekingese Club of America's Breed Standard, "All weights are correct within the limit of 14 pounds. Disqualification: Weight over 14 pounds."
Well, our Hootie is no show dog, and he is "big boned," so the likelihood of him being healthy at 14 pounds is not realistic. Still, Hootie has a passion for food (just like his mother), and -- oh, how do I put this delicately? -- he needs to lose weight. He is pushing 40 pounds.
YES, 40 POUNDS.
While we love to spoil our animals and ensure they feel our love, his current weight will strain his heart and affect his overall health. Today, Andrea will sit down with our oversized pierogi and break the news that he must start a responsible diet and exercise program.
Keep checking back for what will hopefully be motivational updates (without too much cussing on Hootie's part) about our boy's weight loss journey!

"Rocky"
Andrea hit the road on short notice and swooped up this sweet senior from a Fort Worth-area shelter. Rocky can't stand and doesn't seem to hear much, either; however, he's finally home at FoxGarden.
A lovely lady in Kemah donated to him a wheelchair that her beloved dog, Zero, used until he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The extra mobility and support has already helped improve Rocky's strength, and he now can stand up from a laying position briefly.

HOOT!! "Hootie"
Andrea made another rescue run to North Texas to try to save a white-faced senior from being put down; however, unfortunately, since this senior was an owner-surrender, the shelter wouldn't allow her to take him home. Instead, she grabbed this snaggle-toothed boy after he whispered in her ear, "I only want to be with you-uuu!" His only death-row crime was taking up space on account of being unwanted for too long...until now. Hootie loves to bark and lecture all of the other dogs when they get a little excited. No one has the heart to tell him to keep his politics to himself.

"Old Man Abe"
Certainly not where it all began since Andrea has rescued many dogs before him, but Abe is the "O.G." rescue at the inception of FoxGarden. Andrea was visiting family in Lampassas and found a dog on a kill list in North Texas. We took a four-hour detour on the way home and scooped up Abe. He had stage 4 heartworm, bad teeth, and arthritis, Abe is now our first intentional hospice rescue. He has sure surprised us! Now heartworm-free, Abe has been with us for about two years, and we cherish every extra day! Dementia often leaves him staring into corners, but we love him dearly.
